The Secret Life of Bees

by Sue Monk Kidd

"Set in South Carolina in 1964, The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of Lily Owens, whose life has been shaped around the blurred memory of the afternoon her mother was killed. When Lily's fierce-hearted black "stand-in mother," Rosaleen, insults three of the deepest racists in town, Lily decides to spring them both free. They escape to Tiburon, South Carolina--a town that holds the secret to her mother's past. Taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sisters, Lily is introduced to their mesmerizing world of bees and honey, and the Black Madonna. This is a remarkable novel about divine female power, a story women will share and pass on to their daughters for years to come."

The Secret Life of Bees starts off with a tragedy followed by a fourteen-year-old's act of kindness and courage. As Lily sneaks her stand-in mother, Rosaleen, out of jail, she has turned her back on her life with her unstable father and missing mother. In search of answers regarding what happened to her mother, Lily ends up meeting a sisterhood of black women who are both beekeepers and very generous. She finds her niche helping August, June, and May - and yet, she knows she can't run away from her past forever.

The relationships in this story were really what drove the plot line for me. I enjoyed seeing Lily fit in little by little in her new home, and find friends and then love in unexpected places. I was rooting for her and Zach - though the reasons for them to be apart were obvious, their conversations were as sweet as the honey they worked together on extracting. When things took a turn for the worst, I felt for the characters and fully believed the struggle they were experiencing.

Overall The Secret Life of Bees was heartwarming, a story of love and acceptance. Because it is set in 1964, its events were defiant to the social norms of that time. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about its cultural and historical elements, and I felt that by the end, Lily had truly learned a lot about herself and her capabilities.

4/5 stars.
